She knew many visitors to Washington, D.C.buy fare cards to ride the city's public transportation system(公交系统). What would happen, she wondered, if visitors donated(捐赠) old fare cards to help poor people get to jobs, doctors' offices or schools?‎ ‎ Moore Hebert bought 56 fare cards for a group from New Orleans, Louisiana. Its members were traveling to the nation's capital for the Women's March. The march was held on January 21.She asked that the cards should be returned after the event. She offered to donate them to a charitable(慈善) group.‎ ‎ But Moore Hebert did much more than that. She put out a request on Facebook and other social media(媒体). It was directed to the hundreds of thousands of people who attended the Women's March and the hundreds of thousands at the swearing-in ceremony(就职仪式) of President Donald Trump the day before. Would they consider donating old smart cards to help needy people?‎ ‎ Moore Hebert's efforts paid off. More than 10,000 fare cards were donated in just over three weeks. They continue to arrive by mail from as far away as Hawaii. Washington D.C.'s public transportation system requires people to pay for their trips with “SmarTrip” cards. Each card is like a bank card, and comes with a computer chip(芯片) that pays for each trip. A person with a $10 card, who takes a bus trip costing $2, would have $8 remaining for future trips.‎ ‎ Often people visiting Washington D.C., or any city with a fare card system, end up buying a card for more trips than they take. So if they don't plan to return to that city soon, money is lost forever unless they donate the cards.‎ ‎ SmarTrip cards have value, even if there is no balance(余额) left on the cards. That is because a person planning their first trip on the transportation system must buy a SmarTrip card. Each one costs $2.So, even a card, with no balance remaining, would save a person $2.‎ ‎ Moore Hebert hopes to keep the program going, even when donations from the Women's March and presidential swearing-in ceremony stop. She wants Washington D.C. area hotels to ask hotel guests if they are willing to donate their smart cards. Some hotel guests give their fare cards to housekeepers or other hotel employees at the end of their stays. With her efforts, she hopes everyone knows how to deal with the used smart cards so that more people can get help.‎ ‎34.What's Moore Hebert's simple idea? ( )‎ 7‎ A.To become famous on social media.‎ B.To help the poor with donated smart cards.‎ C.To buy smart cards to travel in Washington D.C.‎ D.To collect enough smart cards to visit the president.‎ ‎35.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE about SmarTrip cards? ( )‎ A.They have value themselves. B.They are used for a single trip.‎ C.They can be used as bank cards. D.They will be useless unless donated.‎ ‎36.What is the last paragraph mainly about? ( )‎ A.How to use a smart card. B.Hotels in Washington D.C. area.‎ C.What Moore Hebert is going to do next. D.The Women's March and swearing-in ceremony.‎ ‎37.From the passage, what can we learn about the woman Moore Hebert? ( )‎ A.She is good at doing business. B.She is working for President Donald Trump.‎ C.She is interested in collecting smart cards. D.She is helpful and warm-hearted.‎ ‎【参考答案】‎ Ⅰ.1.D 句意:“多么大的雨啊!”“确实是大雨。 prefer to do sth. rather than do sth. neither…nor…表示两者都不;not only…but also… 而且……;either…or…要么……要么……;both…and… 根据下文“So Kunming is called ‘the Spring City’.” 故选A。 turn out熄灭(电灯、煤气等);carry out执行;put out熄灭;break out突发,爆发。根据“Firemen rushed into the mountains but 27 of them never came back.” You are never too old to learn. 活到老,学到老;Actions speak louder than words. You can't burn the candle at both ends. You can't put all your eggs in one basket. 根据“I have spent several nights preparing for the coming exam.”和“It's bad for you to stay up too late.” 故选A。 前文为“If you are not clear about what you have learnt”, 故需要翻看做的笔记来“研究”。 宾语为your textbook and notes, 其前面动词应为read。故选A。 故选A。 as if似乎;even if即使;so that以便;since that既然,自那以来。句子“…you can make flashcards for coming tests.” D。‎ B)24.dreamed 25.first 26.speak 27.to learn 28.it 29.directly ‎30.with 31.areas 32.sea 33.another Ⅲ.[主旨大意]本文讲的是一个热心肠的、乐于助人的女孩Moore Hebert号召来华盛顿旅游的人在旅游结束时捐出公交卡来物尽其用,帮助穷人的故事。 由下文“What would happen, she wondered, if visitors donated…” 由“Each card is like a bank card, and …”可知公交卡像银行卡一样,带芯片可以支付每次乘车的费用,但不表示公交卡可以被当作银行卡使用,故C错误;由下句“A person with a $10 card, who … have $8 remaining for future trips.”可知公交卡里的钱没有用完,下次乘车还可以使用,故B错误;由第五段“So if they don't plan to … unless they donate the cards.” 故选A。 结合第七段首句“Moore Hebert hopes to keep the program going, even when …” ‎ 7‎
