阅读理解(一) 人物故事 A [2019·辽阳]‎ Devon Gallagher, a college graduate from Philadelphia, wants the world to know exactly where she’s been during her worldwide vacation in a special way.‎ The traveler, who was born with a congenital bone disease(先天性骨病), lost her right leg at the age of four. Although she had a hard time at first, she now thinks that nothing can stop her living her best life.‎ To spread that message, Gallagher shares photos of her travels around the world online, and writes her location across her artificial leg(假肢) before taking a picture. Now she has been taking pictures across Europe, all with the well-known locations written on her artificial leg.‎ ‎“I get a new leg every two years and I can choose the design (设计) on it. One day I had a sudden idea to get a chalkboard,” Gallagher said. “My mum and grandmother didn’t like the idea, but my friends liked it and told me to go for it, so I did.”‎ Gallagher said people often stared when she was writing on her leg. But once she shared the photos, she received only positive feedback(正面的反馈). “My leg hasn’t stopped me doing anything I’ve wanted to do, and I’ve been able to keep up with my peers(同龄人) and lead a pretty great life.”‎ Gallagher shows us that you should never let anything stand in the way of your dreams. It is a fearful thing for travellers, especially if night falls, to hear the hungry howls(狼嚎) of the wolves as they get nearer and nearer.‎ A Russian nobleman, with his wife and a young daughter, was travelling in a sleigh(雪橇) over a bare plain. At nightfall they reached an inn, and the nobleman called for more horses so that he could continue his journey. The innkeeper begged him not to carry on. “There is danger ahead,” he said. “The wolves are out.” The traveller thought that the reason that the man was telling him this was to keep him as a guest for the night. The nobleman replied that it was too early in the season for wolves, and ordered for the sleigh to be made ready to set off. Not caring about the repeated warnings of the innkeeper, the nobleman and his family left on their way.‎ The driver had worked his whole life for the nobleman. He loved his master as he loved his life. The sleigh travelled quickly over the hard snow, and there seemed no signs of danger. The moon began to shine, so that the road looked like shiny silver. Suddenly the little girl said to her father, “What was that strange howling sound I heard just now?” Her father replied, “Nothing but the wind is blowing through the trees.” The child shut her eyes, and kept still for a while. However, in a few minutes, with a face pale with fear, she turned to her father, and said, “Surely that ‎ 7‎ is not the wind! I hear it again. Do you not hear it too? Listen!” The nobleman listened, and far, far away in the distance behind him, he heard a sound of the wolves. His family and the driver of the sleigh did not know the sound.‎ Whispering to the driver, he said, “They are after us. Get your gun ready. I will do the same. We may be able to get away from them. Drive on! Drive on!” The man drove as fast as he could, but nearer, ever nearer, came the howling which the child had first heard. It was perfectly clear to the nobleman that a pack of wolves had got their smell, and was running after them.
